Happy Valentine's Day!
HEAD Start
Lack of time, lack of money, or lack of a significant other: Three excuses that sound good but don't get you off the hook. You can find time, and save money by making a gift...and if you don't have a honey, you can surprise a good friend with a nicely inscribed card.

HEAD Lines
I had a hunch that a few things might have changed since the four Valentine's Days of my college years, so I asked around the student lounge. Turns out, a lot has remained the same. Not sure what to give? Here are the best of the gift ideas, brought to you by the students of the City University of New York:
  • "Anything chocolate!"

  • Homemade cookies or brownies

  • A romantic serenade (but NOT, my students hasten to add, in public!)

  • Flowers ("They don't have to be expensive, as long as they're pretty and not brown and wilted.")

  • "Dinner at our favorite restaurant."

  • "A whole day where she doesn't criticize me."
So pick up your spatula or your lute and get ready for the big day. And while your oven's preheating, read on for dating advice you can use all year round.

Get Into College
From Other HEADS
YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GET GIRLS? Respect them. Be nice to them; it's that simple. Forget pickup lines or getting them drunk. In fact, warn them about guys like that. It sounds silly, but be their hero by being nice and thinking of them. Also, never, ever, ever try a pickup line, unless you're just kidding around. They never work. The only pickup line that works is, "Hi. How are you?" It's a legitimate start to a conversation.

ASK PEOPLE OUT. It takes guts but you'll never know unless you try. And everyone appreciates a little more courtship and a little less of the senseless hookup culture.

TWO RULES: Don't date three guys at the same time who are all on the soccer team. And don't date anyone on your dorm floor.
