New Year's Resolutions
HEAD Start
When the ancient Babylonians invented New Year's resolutions, they probably weren't thinking about getting into medical school or disentangling themselves from forbidden romances with their RAs. But for ancient Babylonians or modern freshmen, doesn't it all boil down to wanting to stop some of your bad habits and start some new good ones? You've got a few precious weeks away from your busy college life of classes, friends, and work. Why not take a step back and look ahead to the spring?

HEAD Lines
  • Social Life: Too much? Not enough? Need to stop spending so much time with the wrong people? Need to get over yourself and reach out to the right people?

  • Money: Are you making enough? Spending too much? Or could you stand to spend a little more - treat yourself without breaking the bank?

  • Grades: Will they get you where you want to go?

From Other HEADS
BEFORE I GRADUATED, I immersed myself in a lot of cultures. I went on a trip with my campus church to Japan, I became a conversation partner with a student from Thailand, and I got lucky to get a Greek roommate. I learned so much about their food, beliefs, family, and dance that I feel as if I’ve been adopted.

MAKING LISTS ALWAYS WORKS FOR ME, especially lists of my goals. I took a media law class and wrote down on a piece of paper that I wanted to get an A. I posted the paper in my dorm room and carried it around with me as a reminder. I ended up getting an A in the class and actually never did better on a presentation than I did in that class. It might sound weird, but sometimes I think that writing things down is half the battle.

HoH Tips
Book it. Time to buy a 2008 planner! Type up your New Year's resolutions, put them in a tiny font, print them out and glue them on the inside cover.  As the ancient Babylonians used to say, "Out of sight, out of mind - in the planner, definitely going to happen."
