What with the $200 bio textbook and all the frozen yogurts you eat at the campus center,
your bank account's a little low. You've been thinking a campus job might be the answer -
so what's next?

In Moo, a novel by Jane Smiley,
sophomore Bob gets what might be the weirdest campus job ever:
He's part of a top-secret faculty experiment.
A professor at Bob's university wants to find out how big a hog can possibly get.
Specifically, a hog named Earl Butz.
Bob is paid to feed Earl Butz five times every day.
And he can't tell any of his friends where he's going!
Bob and Earl Butz are fictional,
but there are still plenty of "unusual" campus jobs out there.
And some that aren't so unusual.
So if you need a job, it's time to print out your resume -
and be ready for anything!
First, you'll want to think about how many hours you can afford
to take away from what you're really here to do: succeed in your classes
and meet amazing people. First, talk yourself out of any illusions you might have,
like "Sure! 30 hours a week - no problem," and then you'll be ready to hit the job market.

HEADS Up |
Here are some of the many options you'll probably find at your school:
- Strange: Working with the catering staff at your college president's house. You'll be able to keep up with all the latest trustee gossip - what could be more fun?
- Stranger: Assisting in a faculty laboratory. The really scientifically advanced positions will probably go to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but faculty will sometimes hire freshmen to do the grunt work. There are interesting sights to be seen...
- Strangest: Put on your furry costume and get out on the field - you can get paid for playing the school mascot!
- Not very strange: The dining hall is always hiring. You'll get messy, but at least there will be free food.
- Not strange at all - but useful: Working in an office on campus will help you build up your clerical skills so you can get a decent-paying temp job next summer.
