Better Than Beer???
Finding the Perfect Student Club for You
HEAD Start
Way back when school started, there were parties every night...and maybe you were right in the middle of them. For a few golden weeks you thought you had figured out the secret to life, college, and happiness in general. But then the unthinkable happened. You started to get just the teensiest bit bored. Could it be that there's more to college life than this?

HEAD Lines
Making friends. Trying new things. Building up your confidence by doing something you've always been good at. Find the right club, and you can do it all. You may even be able to bring your studies to life if your activities connect somehow with your courses - and suddenly studying isn't just studying anymore; it means something. (And btw, it never hurts to build up your résumé...)

There really is an activity for everyone, but beware. Although college students love to start new clubs, the same love doesn't always go into keeping those clubs active. So just do a little bit of quality assurance before you commit.

PLAY ULTIMATE FRISBEE; it's a good way to compete. You can't compete in most college sports unless you've played your entire life. If you want to play varsity soccer, you can't just do it. With Ultimate Frisbee, we take everybody. You don't have to be athletic or even have any experience in it. You learn everything and you play other colleges.

WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME, enjoy things that are non school-related and healthy: Join a really random club, be in a play, volunteer, run a marathon, become a film noir enthusiast. Your free time can really give you a chance to meet people of similar mind-set and interest, and can also expose you to interests and ideas you can't find in the lecture hall. Also, make sure you watch a little bit of TV now and then, to prevent college "bubble" syndrome.

Your best option is your school's Student Life site. Not finding what you're looking for there? Read up on starting your own club on About.com: http://collegelife.about.com/od/sportsclubsgroups/ht/studentgroup.htm

HoH Tips
  • Busy bee? Don't rule out getting involved. If you have lots of outside responsibilities already, it's better to choose a club with a low time commitment than not to join anything at all.

  • For commuters: Join something! If you're commuting to school, it's especially important for you to have a chance to connect with other students outside of class. You may have to miss those late-night dorm hall heart-to-hearts, but you don't have to miss out on having a full college experience.
