When you bring baby home, here's the necessities (aside from breast milk or formula!).
• A CAR SEAT: Use it every time the baby travels in an automobile, including the trip home from the hospital. The car seat must be approved for your
infant/child and placed in the middle of the back seat
facing backward until the baby weighs 20 pounds.
• AN ACCURATE THERMOMETER (AND THE KNOWLEDGE TO USE IT): There are many kinds of temperature measuring devices. In the first year, the rectal thermometer is the most accurate. After six months, the ear thermometer may be used.
• ACETAMINOPHEN DROPS TO TREAT PAIN OR FEVER: The best-known brand is Tylenol. Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) is also effective, but should be used only as a backup because it can upset the stomach.
• HAND SANITIZER: but soap and water will do.
• A FEW COTTON, washable outfits with diaper access (and a good supply of diapers).
• CHILD-PROOF ENVIRONMENT for the baby’s safety
• SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT: If parents smoke, they should quit. If they can’t quit, smoke only outside—never smoke in an enclosed place where the baby may be, including in the car.
