On Pee and Poop (Your Baby's)

You will be amazed at how frequently your baby pees and (later) poops. Some babies pee and poop after every feeding! If so, it certainly means your baby is getting enough to eat. You can expect at least 4-5 pees every day and 1-3 poops every day.

After the first few weeks, a breast-fed baby may poop much less frequently (even as little as once a week). If nursing is still going well and there are lots of wet diapers, it means that almost all of the mother’s milk is being used for nutrition and growth and there is little waste (another advantage of breast-feeding). Don’t worry; after solids are introduced, there will be plenty of poops!

Obviously, new parents will have to get comfortable with changing wet and dirty diapers. Again, if you feel you could use some help, call on experienced parents you trust for advice and instruction. It is your choice whether you use disposable or cloth diapers. (Hint: A month or so of pre-paid diaper service is a wonderful gift for new parents.)
