if you can realistically make the argument that there won't be enough room for an extended stay, make it. tell them you really want to see them and if they want to stay (free of charge) at your house, you would love to have them, but can only manage a week at a time. ask them what week they were thinking.

A lot of murders happen in the summer. The hot weather gets to people. Casually mention that the next time you talk to your in-laws, and you shouldn't have a problem with them overstaying their visit.
