What's a good way to motivate your kid to look for financial aid and scholarships?

Be really honest about what you are prepared to do financially to support your child's education. Your son or daughter needs to understand the implications of your ability to pay for different college options. Knowing your capacity they can then understand what is truly in it for them if they get financial aid or don't. It could mean the difference between a private university or a state school; living at home or on campus; 4 year college or community college; out of state or in state.
If your child knows what is truly available and what he is likely to receive then they can plan accordingly.

I sat with my daughter and did some of the preliminary research with her. I helped her break through the apprehension and apathy and got her going. I think it also let her know how important this project was to her future.

If it is crucial that your child contribute to his or her college tuition by earning scholarships, and if you are betting on that, it is necessary to let them know. If they understand that their actions and initiative could make the difference in what sorts of schools they are able to choose, they are more likely to take the task to heart. Also, with numerous search engines and lots of types of scholarships popping up daily, you can easily help your child stay on the ball about what is emergent and what scholarship applications are due.
