Protecting my apartment against burglaries-whats the best way to do it?

I found a place on the ground floor-is it essential to get an alarm?

RE: Protecting my apartment against burglaries-whats the best way to do it?

I would be very careful about keeping that window closed and locked all the time--even in the day or when you're home! Sad, but true that so many times you read stories about someone breaking in to a house or apartment and the article will say, "The suspect entered through an open window." Even in relatively safe neighborhoods, an open window is seen as an open invitation.
If the alarm is connected to a police dept, I would say it could be worth it but that's probably expensive. A regular alarm may or may not stop someone, but every added deterrent is another chance at averting a robbery, so if you can afford it, why not? (You could also install a bar that makes it difficult to pry open a window.)
