Some simple rules to follow to make sure ED works for your child.

Thousands of college students apply for Early Decision each year. For some, it's the right thing to do. For others, it might work to their disadvantage. How do you know where your child falls?

Early Decision is right if:

• Your child has identified a true front-runner school, at which he can see himself above all others, by visiting in person;

• You can afford the cost (either fully or with estimated aid);

• There are no doubts about the fit between your child and the school—you are committing to it;

• Your child has time to complete all testing in advance and is confident that his grades have so far been a good representation of his ability.

Early Decision is wrong if:

• Your child is not fully sure of any one school over another;

• You will need to or want to compare financial aid packages;

• You are hoping your child will be awarded a scholarship at one or several schools;

 You see ED as a way of upping the admission odds in the game of college admission;

• You and your child have not visited the campus, as well as other college campuses for comparison.
