You have a lot riding on the counselor you pick. Make sure you choose the right one for you.
The key to finding a good private counselor is assessing his experience in the admissions field. A good counselor sees his role as a professional—he is an expert who does this as a profession, versus a way to make money from a topical issue. Ask for recommendations, check out the established places in your area, then answer the following questions:
• How many years has the counselor been in this profession?
• Has he worked on college admissions staffs before?
• Has he been a high school guidance counselor?
• Do you trust his writing ability?
• Does he have advanced degrees in counseling or education?
• Does he participate in NACAC, the professional organization?
• Does he regularly take college tours to keep current?
• Is his personality and work style a fit with your child and with you?
