How to handle test scores in the college admissions process.

The dreaded tests: torture devices that require preparation and retakes and drive your child crazy with constant thoughts of “Can I do better?” With testing, there is a ceiling. Yes, preparation will make a difference, but at some point, your child’s score is really in the ballpark it will remain; future scores will only move around in insignificant tens of points.

When your child reaches this point, ease the pressure on both of you. Remember, test
scores are not solely based on intellect. They are influenced by income level, ethnic background, high school strength, and learning styles and abilities or disabilities. Admissions offices consider these scores together with the academics. There are many schools for which a solid showing is all you need.

And remember this as well: Your child will not be asked his test scores ever again after this admissions process. Help him do his best, try a few times, and move forward to more critical issues.
