What grade should your child be in before you start the groundwork for college?

My daughter will be in 9th grade in Sept 08. Is there anything we should be doing at this stage regarding college, or is it too early?

Speaking from a high school student-soon to be college student point of view 9th grade is way to early to start thinking about colleges. I think the best thing that my parents did was to talk to me about getting good grades and to have in the back of my mind how important university is, but it is too much pressure to start high school and immediately have to think about going to college. I think the best time is the beginning of junior year.

I think that kids should be aware that junior year is an important year academically, and the pressure is rising. Beyond that, it would be helpful to be making lists of possible schools at this point.

College should always be mentioned, I think, from a young age as a passing notion-but just something to put in the back of their minds. Their first year of high school you want to go easy because this is already a big adjustment and you dont want to make it any harder. By sophmore year you should be asking questions and giving advice about applying to schools and making sure by the beginning of junior year that they have met with their guidance counselors and are adequately prepared for the sats-and that they know how important they are for the future.
