Working in college or spending more time on studying?
Should I encourage my daughter to work while in college or tell her that I will help her with money while she concentrates on school?

RE: Working in college or spending more time on studying?
I think it's a great idea to encourage her to get some kind of part-time work; it helps keep kids grounded and helps them develop a work ethic, a sense of responsibility and a sense of independence. It also doesn't hurt to have some pocket money. If she can get something related to what she's studying, that could be beneficial too. She could make some contacts, and learn more in a practical, real setting (and maybe even get credit for it.) Some kids get work on campus, which is convenient. She'll probably still need a little help with money, even if she does work.......but not as much as if she doesnt!

I agree that a small part time job a few times a week helps them to prioritize their time better. Of course either way you will help them with expenses, but this way they can feel like they are the adults that they beg to be treated as-by earning their own money. Work study programs are always something to look into. But-I would say that first semester freshman year is not the time to start pushing a job, let them settle in first.
