The best thing to do is just be friendly to everyone. If you do befriend people with different backgrounds than you, than go with them to events that you otherwise would never have gone to. It is quite an experience to be the only person in a place different from everyone else and in most cases people will appreciate your curiosity and open mind and they will enjoy teaching you about their culture. Do the same for them too so that they can experience some of your enviornment. I also think taking classes on feminism if you are a guy, african american culture if you are white, or buddhism if you are of a western religion will help you to break those barriers you speak of.

Besides what Josh said about being friendly, it's a great idea to be active on campus. Get a calendar of events and attend everything you can that's school- or club-sponsored. If there's a dance and nobody's dancing, be the first. If there's a hypnotist, volunteer. Sure, you might feel silly, but people will recognize you and want to get to know you. I went up and danced with some upperclassmen chaperones at an event full of awkward freshmen, and afterwards all the people there thanked me for breaking the ice. My friend was hypnotized into dancing to Tik Tok, and students are constantly saying hi to "ke$ha" now. Some people would be embarrassed, but we're just glad to not be faceless freshman on campus.
