Let's Get Physical

Get back in shape after the ardors of freshman year.

First, let's look back on your freshman year. When it comes to exercise, there are two kinds of freshmen: the freshmen who wear workout clothes more often than jeans and hit the gym just about every day, and the freshmen who are always planning to work out more but never quite make it off the couch. If you fall into the second category, why not make your life easier now that you're about to become a sophomore? You don't have to join a team or become a slave to the treadmill, to get a regular workout. Taking a physical education class will force you to drag yourself to the gym at least a couple of times a week and can turn out to be fun as well.

Check out the offerings at your college, and see if a friend will enroll with you next semester. You don't need experience, skill or even muscle tone - all you need is enthusiasm, the right clothing, and willingness to take a chance on something new!

TAKE FUN CLASSES. I took yoga and aerobics. I also joined the salsa-dancing club. These things break up the monotony of the usual classes.

MY FRESHMAN YEAR I TRIED ARCHERY AND KARATE for the first time. I wasn't good at either of them, but it was fun being bad at something new.

 HoH Tips

Lots of colleges host their oddball physical education classes through the Dance Department. If you've been looking through the Schedule of Classes for that great capoeira class everyone's talking about and you just can't find it, try the Dance section - it's not just for ballerinas!

Don't be turned off if your college charges a small additional fee for physical education classes. Regular exercise will boost your energy levels all semester, so you'll save at least that much on coffee!
