WAY TOO Overbearing Family

My whole family wants to come with me to help me settle in. They want to rent a room in a hotel near my dorm just to make sure the first few days go by ok! How do I NOT LET THIS HAPPEN? Thanks.

Yeah. Just tell them that this needs to be your own experience. And as much as you appreciate their caring, you've got to learn to get along by yourself. That's what college is all about. Say you love them, and will invite them up to see you parents weekend, but that you don't feel comfortable with them staying for the first few days.

Wow, you're in trouble man. You're right to want to end this now. You don’t want you family surprising every weekend, and in so doing not really allowing for you to be free or fully get settled in. I think all you have to do is be honest. Respectful, but honest.

WAY TOO...
Make sure not to hurt their feelings though. Let them down easy. This is an experiecne for them too, after all. And, they're the ones paying for it.

RE: WAY TOO Overbearing Family
Remember that, in many ways, this is as big an experience for them as it is for you. Let them share in it, but let them know that their staying several days into the year is going to prevent you from settling in properly before classes start and may affect your ability to meet people during the first week. This is important! They should understand.
