Although it seems practical is it insulting to children when we turn their rooms into our entertainment centers?
I see some of my friends turning their children's rooms into gyms and offices, is this appropriate?

If the child has graduated college and is not living home, then it seems very appropriate to use the space in a way that is useful to the people living in the house. Of course, if the child is a freshman living in a dorm, I would say that's premature.
It's probably a good idea to tell your child that you're thinking of making their room into an office or gym or whatever and feel them out. Otherwise it would come as a shock and be hurtful for them to return home and see that their room has been transformed without warning.
If they express resistance to the change, you can have a discussion and work it out from there. I think as long as there's a place for them to stay in the house when they visit or come home, they'll be ok.
Besides, their room may not be as important to them anymore because they're creating their own homes and spaces elsewhere in the world.
