My eldest son and I once got into a huge fight about his failing grades in some of his college courses, and he said no matter what he did he knew he would end up more successful than me. I dropped out of college in my junior year and it keeps coming back to haunt me now as I try to get my kids prepared for college. My son later apologized for saying it, but it’s something I never forgot.

My daughter would open her door and scream, “I hate you, Mom!” And then she would close the door and open it up and shout out her stepfather’s name and say, “And I hate you too!”

What I say when my kid says horrible things (By:lcalvacca)

When my daughter has said horrible things to get to me, I've varied in my response but I've always felt the best about how I handled it when I just said "I sorry that you feel that way, but my job is to keep you safe, and help you learn to be independent, so you can hate me for that, but I won't stop doing my job." Other times, I've said, when she gets too pushy or demanding, "Sometimes you're going to get what you want, and sometimes you're not. That's the way it is." These ideas seem to make her pause. It's a thin, tricky line between being the extremes of being punative and being a push-over.
