My teen won't leave his room
Is it common for your teen to stay in his room for most of the day?

This actually gives more power to you - if they ever do something really, really wrong, you can say, "Well, next time you do that I'll just have to remove your bedroom door from its hinges." They'll never do it again!

Sure. As long as you have access to the room. If you think something suspicious is going on, you have the right to enter at any time. (Masturbation is not suspicious, by the way.)

RE: My teen won't leave his room
If your child has lots of things in her/his room (computer, tv, stereo, books, phone etc.) it makes sense that he would want to hang out sometimes because there's plenty to do. You have to decide if there's something wrong with it based on your kid's personality and interests. If my child was in her room all day on occasion, it wouldn't worry me because she reads and talks on the phone, but I would be concerned if she did this all weekend or during the week because that wouldn't be typical for her. When she is in her room for long periods, I knock on the door and check in.
Also, how often does he do this? Does he lock the door? Does he come out to eat meals? Is this something that is chronic? Does he see his friends? When you check on him, how does he act? What does he say he's doing when you ask him? How does he appear in general? It's wise to be concerned and vigilant because if there is something going on, you're going to be on top of it.
