how can I stay away.

It feels like scratching an itch, but I want to see her every once and a while since we broke up. It feels like letting off heartbreak steam, but after the fact I feel like I've slid back into my morass. Any suggestions on how to avoid this boom and bust cycle? thanks. Heartbroken

Stop scratching that itch! I know it can be tough, but the best way to get over an ex is to cut off communication from that person. Eventually, that urge to itch could go away.

Get back onto the dating scene. It makes it much easier to get over an ex, when you're dating someone new that you really like.

I agree that eventually the itch will go away. You'll get tired of the game and the drama and the feeling bad for backsliding. You'll realize the emptiness of it. You'll start to resolve feelings of sadness and rejection. It's probably your way of trying to make the transition to being alone and to work out in your mind what happened. I don't know who broke up with who, but sometimes you just want to know that the other person will still scratch your itch. Backsliding doesn't make you a bad or a weak person; it can just be part of the process and you're doing what you have to do to get through it. The fact that you're aware of what you're doing is a good sign that you will move on sooner rather than later.
