A friend of mine in a dilemma

My friend has a crush on his tutor for his spanish class. I told him its not a good idea for that to happen. He tells me that they have so much in common and even though thats true I still feel he is getting himself in a tough situation. We are both in college and she graduates this semester and he will graduate next year. They are also both the same age. He wants to at least stay in touch with her, but does not know how to ask her. What should he do? Should he just not pursue staying in touch? How awkward is it for him to have a crush on his tutor? Has anyone ever heard of this?
