Safety when meeting someone in person the first time

Hi: I've heard horror stories about women who meet men online, then for a date and feel very unsafe with this person. Anybody have advice on how to stay safe in this circumstance?

Meet only in a public location. Don't have him pick you up at home or tell him where you live exactly. Make sure someone else knows where you are going and with whom (and if you get worried on the date mention that your friend knows about the date). Try to find out if you have some common friends, contacts, etc. before the date so it is not totally "blind."

But most important when you are leading up to the date in the e-mail and phone stage see if you feel comfortable with what the person is telling you and how he sounds. Trust your instincts. If he doesn't sound right...don't go out.
