In my first out of college job, I won huge points with my company’s director and some other high-ranking colleagues by being able to talk football. The director was a Georgia Tech fan. Although I am a University of Georgia fan, I kept up with Tech enough to speak intelligently. I credit not being laid off in a huge downsizing because I not only had shown that I was a dedicated employee, but I was considered a friend.

Rate this answer:       (1 votes) RE: Getting to know the boss? Let the boss take the lead in setting the tone of your relationship. Some bosses want to know more about you, and some don't. Some are warm and some are aloof. Some are all business, and are more open. If you try to push the boundaries, you'll end up alienating them or annoying them. Pay attention to their cues, and act accordingly.

Always remain mysterious so they do not know your little habits or when you're lying. I tried to call in sick one day, after becoming close with my boss. I was moaning and groaning and everything. But she just said, "I'm so sorry to hear that, but be up here in an hour, and when I call in sick next week, can you lie for me?"

I think if it comes naturally by small talks than that's great, but a little distance is professional and more appropriate. Don't be afraid to ask them questions, which show both curiosity and hard work, but asking about their hobbies or life outside of work is just not needed.
