Never done it before? Here's what you need to know.

Don’t just stand around waiting for someone to recognize your genius and accomplishments. Step forward and request your promotion, but for best results, follow these steps first:

1. Build your case: Make a list of the major things you accomplished, taking special note of work that was above and beyond your normal responsibilities. This should not be a list of your current job description.

2. Make sure you’ve paid attention to what your manager told you to do, then show where you have done so.

3. Point out any skill-building activities you’ve done or professional training courses you’ve taken.

4. Carefully prepare what you are going to say.

5. Make an appointment specifically to have this conversation.

6. Present your case clearly and logically.
