How to take the next steps up the corporate ladder.
So, you want to continue your education and, by connection, advance your career? Smart choice!
First, find out what is open to you. Many large organizations have “Universities,” which offer many different types of professional development, from technical training to leadership development. If that’s the case, look at the course catalogue to find out what is offered to people at your level. If you work for a smaller organization, you may have to look elsewhere for training. Ask around to find out what other people have done and found useful. A lot of universities offer adult extension courses, such as public speaking, negotiations, or project management, that are really professional development. The courses are often reasonably priced, and many companies are willing to reimburse you for it.
Second, figure out what skills you want some help in developing. You should work with your boss on this, to help figure out what would most benefit your career. Presentation and public speaking skills are often very useful to have, and many organizations send people to training courses on these subjects. You may be interested in developing broader skills, such as project management and customer service, or more specific skills—like understanding the insurance reimbursement process. Together with your boss, determine what would be the best use of your time and the company’s dollars, and go do it. It can only help your career.
