So, when a person is out of town on company travel, and the work day is done, what do they do? Is it acceptable to go out and have some fun? After all, you're traveling!

I think there's a temptation, especially by young people, to "see the town" they're visiting on a company trip - going to tourist joints, restaurants, bars. I did this for a while, but you get to the point when you just want to get some sleep. Don't try to turn your business trip into a person vacation. Do your work, go back to the hotel, get some sleep. Save the vacation stuff for when you are actually on vacation.

Sometimes at conventions, a group of people will go out after the work day and it will get pretty crazy. I learned that just because some people are going out and getting drunk, it doesn't mean you have to. No one cares if you stay for one drink and then go back to the hotel. And the next morning, you will be fresh and others will be hung over!

There is nothing worse than the morning after the night you were the life of the convention party. …

Yeah, definitely go out and see the town, but be the one that only has a drink or two while your friends go for it.

That way, you'll hopefully discover cool stuff about a new place, not be lame, and be relatively fresh for whatever the next day brings with work.

If you have the opportunity, seize it! But don't compromise the job (or the performance) that gave you that opportunity.
