Great advice on moving your pets.

Moving? Here’s some advice on moving your pets from the book “How to Survive a Move” (Hundreds of Heads Books, www.hundredsofheads.com, $13.95), straight from people who’ve done it:

“I usually move my pets last, putting them in their carriers for the ride over. I keep the cats inside for the first week or two so they don’t run away. When I moved across the country it was a cold winter. Two of the cats rode in the back of my pickup truck with little hand warmers under the covers to keep them toasty. My elderly cat couldn’t stay warm that way, though, so she rode on my lap for three days.”

“Try not to alter your dog’s diet during the move and definitely do not feed it rawhide treats on an eight-hour car ride. I forgot food for our dog, so I kept feeding her treats. When we got to the new house, there was diarrhea all over the kennel. The first night we were there, the dog vomited all over the new carpet.”

“Cats don’t like to move. When we moved into our new house, first I moved all her things and a blanket she liked to the new house. When I got her there, I put those things in a room — the one farthest away from any outside doors — and locked her in there for 24 hours to give her a chance to calm down and get used to the new place.”

“Always keep animals in a container when you move. One time I was moving my brother’s cat without one, and the cat was so freaked out that it peed all over the car. You can never get that smell out. We’ve steam cleaned it a couple times, but it still smells back there.”

“Feeding the cat a sliver of Dramamine prior to the car ride might work — as long as she doesn’t immediately throw up that very sliver of Dramamine.”
