Is there any real way to know if me and a potential roommate will be suitable for each other?

Living with a stranger? The risks? How can I know what I am getting myself into?

You can sit down with them a do a thorough interview or sorts and even ask them for references if they are willing to go that far, but unfortunately there is no real way to know unltil you live with them. Definitely go out with them once or twice before though, maybe check out the people that they hangout with which can give you some sense of their lifestyle. If you are nervous about certain things dont be afraid to lay down ground rules about cleaning and things similar to that.

There are no guarantees, but it's a really good idea to talk about specific things that are important to you.

If you don't smoke then, you know you probably don't want someone who smokes. You should know their basic schedule to see if it conflicts with yours in a way that would be disruptive. You should find out how they feel about you having friends (or lovers!) visiting and/or staying over . You need to talk about how each of you sees dealing with utilities and food. You might want to talk about the kinds of things you each do for fun. If the person says they love to go out and get drunk, that may or not be a red flag for you. and etc.................

The more direct and specific your conversation, the better chance for success.
