open How to plan out a successful move? EdtheApple 11.19.2007 13:47
My moves have been disasters. Could use some organization advice and whatnot.

Plan your move like you would a wedding: with a to-do checklist, broken down by time periods. Three months ahead, clean your house and donate unwanted items to charity. A month prior, get change of address forms from the post office and gather boxes. A week before, start packing. Three days before, eat the leftover food in your fridge and turn on the utilities in your new place. Breaking down tasks like this is essential.

- Write out a timeline of events to the finest detail. It will help you see what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done.

- Set aside at least your current month's rent for the move. Between paying for the truck and gas, turning on utilities, and ordering take-out every day, your money will get eaten up fast!

- Make lists early. Several weeks before your move, write down all of the places that will need your change of address, names of utilities you will need to turn off or turn on, etc.

One little thing that helps:

Create a Yahoo or Hotmail account for yourself if your regular email is tied to the phone or through a local provider. Email all your family and friends with your new email address, and your new contact info when you move.

My husband is going to injure himself during our move. I just know it. Any tips for heavy lifting to pass along to him?

Be careful not to strain yourself. I've thrown my back out so many times and usually when this happens you don't feel it right away. Instead, you wake up sore a couple of days later.

Find a pace that's comfortable and always lift with your legs. We were trying to lift a dresser that must have weighed 600 pounds. I tried to pull with my back. I ended up in the hospital.

You should suck up your pride and rent a dolly. It'll save your back and be the best ten bucks you ever spent.
