I discovered an endless supply of boxes at the local recycling center. I just borrow the boxes and return them after I move.

I see all those big boxes at the u--haul store. Is it really worth it to pile your stuff in those?

Well, big boxes seem like a really great idea when you're packing, because they hold more and you need less of them. But when you're carrying a big box of kitchen stuff up the stairs to your new place, you remember that smaller ones weigh less.

Get a variety of Ziploc baggies and a Sharpie marker. Whenever you take apart a piece of furniture, put all of the nuts and bolts into one baggie and label it clearly. This prevents important pieces from getting lost.

Set aside a box for your remote controls, a tool kit and a phone - anything you need right away. This should be the last box you pack and the first box you unpack at the new place. This keeps you from digging through dozens of boxes to find the important stuff.

Always have a shoebox or other container labeled VIP, "Very Important Papers." Right now, my passport is hiding in an unknown box, most likely in storage.

For each room, put the essentials that you'll need for the first three days in one box. If it's for the kitchen, label it "Kitchen, Immediately." Everything else that belongs on the kitchen but isn't critical, put in "Kitchen, Storage."
