If you are a fast typer and catch everything the lecturer is saying than I think the computer is better in terms of going back to study the notes afterwards-as it is much more organized and neat. If in fact there is internet though it can be a terrible distraction. Not only that those games are really addictive and if it's a boring class than you might end up missing a lot and defeating the purpose.

RE: Is the computer too distracting or does it actually make it easier to take notes?
In my work as a writer, I sometimes use the computer and othertimes notebooks when I take notes. Each one has its pros and cons. A notebook is lighter and more portable; it doesn't crash and is unlikely to get broken or stolen. Computers may be easier if you're going to rewrite and edit(as many students do because it helps them review and remember the information.) The computer is also good because you have all the functions that help you move things around easily. The sound of the keyboard, however, can be distracting to others if you're the only one using a computer.
You can always mix and match methods. If you use the computer for some classes, you can always print out your notes and paste them (real tape and scissors!) into a notebook so you have a portable spare. (of course, you should back up everything you do on the computer on a disc, just in case. Sounds obvious, but most people don't do this and come to regret it.)
You have to experiment and see what you feel most comfortable with, but in the end, it's probably more about how good of a listener and notetaker you are than the physical method you use to take your notes. You will develop your notetaking skills and shorthand over time either way.

I think the computer is way too distracting to bring to class, especially if there is a wireless connection. No matter whose computer screen I glance at during my own dazing during class-they are either playing a game, writing an email, or doing other work not at all related to the class. Of course the writing is neater, but you should be able to read your own handwriting by now-no? Anyway, I dont like so much to carry around the computer-you never know.
