The work load, to me, isn't that different. It's just that you're suddenly forced to do it on your own, and no one - parents, teachers - babysits you to make sure you do it. Just keep some sort of daytimer or schedule, keep up with your homework, and you should be all right.

It depends on the school. The college I go to has an enormous amount of homework, mostly reading. I try to treat it like a full-time job, going to class in the mornings and studying in the afternoons. Then doing a little work at night after dinner and fun.

Your workload will depend on the college you're enrolled at and the classes you're taking. By your drop/add period, you should have a good sense of whether you will be able to handle that workload based on your syllabi. If it looks too tough, drop a class that has a heavy workload and replace it with an easier class that falls into your graduation requirements.

It is going to feel at first like it is easier than high school because nothing is due for a while; rarely do they ask you questions from the reading in class; and you usually only have a few tests. BUT this is a rookie mistake. Once you fall behind it is very hard to catch up. Staying up with the reading makes the classes more relevant and makes studying what you know easier to remember because you've already heard it before. You should go to class because that is what you are there for...and that is one way of learning. Stay ahead...not behind. You've got to be your own policeman. Unlike high school no one will catch you as you start sliding behind until it's too late.

Lots of reading; occasional papers, difficult tests. It is VERY easy to fall behind in the reading...or to just stop doing the reading. Don't! That is how you really learn. It is also easy to stop going to class and see it as a waste. Don't that is also how you learn...and more importantly learn what is important.

I think work load depends upon what kind of student you are, how demanding your high school was, and how self motivated you are to go to class and study. Unless you are highly confident in your ability to juggle your new- found independence and social scene -- do not schedule those 8 a.m. classes.

The work in college is never going to be easy but it always depends on how tough your professor is. Also, sometimes you will see that your syllabus says that you need to hand in a paper every week and then have quizzes every few weeks, but this is not always a bad thing. It forces you to keep up with the work and gives you more a chance to do well. Whereas when you see a syllabus with two papers you think it is going to be easy but if you somehow dont do well-you are basically screwed-the whole grade counts on only these two papers.

There is a lot of work in college-but in a different way than high school. There is always a lot of reading, which is a lot more intensive than the reading in high school, but normally a lot more time to do it in. It is always important to be careful to keep up with the reading because the paper or final in the end will always come from this material. Cramming is never fun.
