Most of my classes had a big lecture once a week, and smaller discussions twice a week. Participate in the smaller discussions: It helps out the graduate student who is usually teaching, and it makes the time go faster.

The best way is to sit near the front. This way you can ask questions without screaming, stay focused, and have more of a reason not to fall asleep. :)
