RE: Getting involved
1. Go to www.HandsOnNetwork.org and see if there is a local chapter in your area. If so they offer hundreds of volunteer projects in a variety of areas that don't require a long term commitment.
2. See if there is a local volunteer center in your area. A search can be done at http://www.pointsoflight.org/.
3. Contact your local school or church/synagogue to see if they have needs.
Good luck. Starting is the biggest hurdle. Once you begin you will only wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

RE: Getting involved
1. Get involved with your local school, nearby hospital, or church to lend a hand or the local chapter of a national organization, such as the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society or Habitat for Humanity.
2. Check out national clearinghouses, such as http://www.volunteermatch.org/ or http://www.volunteersolutions.org/. These groups feature information and volunteer opportunities available at a network of participating nonprofits.
3. Consider your passion, interests and beliefs and go from there - if it is better streets in your neighborhood talk to your local council representative or get involve in your homeowners' association. If fighting cancer is on your mind, organize a corporate team in your office to participate and raise money for a local charity event or fun run.
The opportunities are endless when you care about your case.
