I want to transger to a school that is a lower tier-does it make that big of a difference?

I think if you do well at the new school and you are happier, not that much difference...(unless perhaps you are leaving Harvard for a party school or technical college). You may, however, experience in life that your classmates at the new school are slightly less ambitious or accomplished and that could affect some later in life success networking.

I think it all depends on how big of a drop you are making. If you are going down 2 or 3 spots on the US News rankings it really does not make a difference because the rankings are not that accurate anyway. And if you think you will enjoy yourself and be happier that is very important as well. If you are dropping down a long way then in order to make up for the lack of prestige you will probably have to work a lot harder and have much better grades, which is something to consider.

If your happiness is affecting your performance at your current school, it would be worth it to make the transfer. Going to a school with less prestige, if you are willing to work hard, may mean you will stand out more.
