RE: Going Away or Staying?
Sometimes staying close to home has lots of practical and financial appeal. Lots of students can become fairly independent commuting, but it has been my experience that students who go away gain more independence and have a greater chance to reflect on life at home. It is also a great opportunity to get to know another part of the country!

I think it depends on how you feel about your current city. I felt quite sheltered and thought it was important to go to a college that would open my eyes to many different people and their ideas about the world. If you are feeling hesitant and are not ready why not go to community college for a year and then think about transferring so that you can get the best of both worlds, you can also have the chance to raise your grades and possibly get into a better school.

RE: Going Away or Staying?
It's a good idea to do the pro/con list to make that decision and to really examine why you are conflicted. What are your concerns about going away vs. staying closer to home? Are you being pressured by family or friends to stay close? Are you afraid of leaving? Do you really love where you are now? My two nieces both went to college: one was very clear from the beginning that she wanted to go away and so went from Pennsylvania to Boston (Tufts). She also went to Paris as part of her coursework--point being she is very much a traveler. The other niece went to community college and then moved on to another local, well-regarded state university and lived on campus. Even though it was about a 25-minute drive, it gave her the space she was comfortable with, without going out of state.
The point is that they have different personalities and made different choices based on their comfort levels, but they are both getting good educations and they are both comfortable with their choices. I think sometimes there's too much pressure to go away, and a stigma attached to staying local. Whatever path you choose will lead to new experiences and people. Remember that education is a life-long process and when and how much you expand your geographic and mental boundaries is not limited to your college experience.

I think that going away (and it doesnt have to be THAT far, just living outside of your home) is the best way to go, if you can afford it. If money is not an issue in your decision to stay home or not I think you should definitely go away for school. it is a much different experience than just staying at home, and it will help you grow as a person as well.
