Re: How far away should college be?
Unless you have a real reason to stay close to home (sick family member or something), college is about getting away. You should go as far away as the location of the best college that accepts you.

Re: How far away should college be?
Contrary to popular belief, your parents won't bother you at college. At least, not by visiting. So if you're worried about getting away from your parents, you can stay pretty close and still keep them away. The more common problem is you - going back home is a great temptation, for laundry, food, etc. You need to go far enough away that the temptation is not there, except on holidays. How far is that?

RE: How far away should college be?
Unless there are extenuating circumstances, I think you should choose a college that is out of the state where you grew up. College will give you the opportunity to grow as a person, and when you leave the area you're familiar with, it forces you to step outside the box, try new things and make new friends.
