Is it a good thing or a bad thing to have an older sibling at your college? I'm considering one school where my brother also goes ...

Depends. Most of the time this is a good thing. But if you are trying to get out from his awesome shadow, go someplace else and be someone else.

My older brother goes to school with me. I think it's great. In fact, though we fought for most of our childhood, we have actually become really close. My brother doesn't interfere, but he gives me advice and introduces me to older friends if I want. Plus, it's just good to know you have some family nearby. His friends all look out for me, too!

I went to the same school as my sister. On the whole it was an advantage. I met her friends making my network bigger. We could share a car -- if either of us was there alone we probably couldn't have had a car. She was able to coach me on classes and teachers to take. The only down side would be if you really felt like you couldn't experience independence with the sibling there....but most schools are big enough that it is not common to run into someone in a different year regularly unless you are trying.

I liked having my brother at school. we too shared a car and it was great to have someone to show you around. I really never felt like it was suffocating in any way since when I wanted to be with my friends I was and if i wanted to see him I would. You have to remember that college is not your house, and you will not be FORCED to be around your sibling if you don't feel like it.
