Pros and cons on counselors your college search
In addition to the resources in your high school, you may want to get outside help in the admissions process from a private counselor. These counselors are not a replacement for your own research and work, but they can help you focus your college search and your applications.
PROS
1. A good private counselor or consultant will get to know you well and can help you figure out a personal game plan: where you should be applying, what you should do to stand out, etc.
2. They help expand your knowledge of colleges and universities and their environments.
3. They provide extra emotional support throughout the process.
4. They help you strategize about what to highlight in your essays and your applications.
5. They help manage your expectations (and Mom and Dad’s) to make sure that you will be admitted somewhere that is a great fit for you.
CONS
1. Private consultants are expensive.
2. They cannot “get you in,” no matter what they promise. You will ultimately rise and fall on your own merits.
3. They do not have access to admissions offices. Admissions offices will speak only to your high school counselor.
4. Anyone can work as a private consultant. It’s up to you to make sure you are hiring someone who is knowledgeable and experienced.
5. In the Internet age, you can do a lot of research on colleges on your own.
